It may be ‘winter’ but here in Miami it’s been quite warm. Sure, we’ve had a few ‘cool’ downs, but this winter I feel has been on the warmer side. Which leads to the question, do you drink cold drinks when it’s cold and hot drinks when it’s hot? Or can you have a cold drink when it’s cold outside? Debate all you want, but typically there’s nothing better than a cold refreshing drink on a hot summer day, however, there’s just something about coffee though. I don’t mind coffee hot during the summer. Regardless, this chocolate cream cold brew has been helping me survive these *warm* winter days.
Admittedly I’ve been lazy. While I bring my coffee most days, there are days I’ll go to that famous coffee place and buy a coffee. Prices have gotten out of hand though, so consider this your reminder and save money by making this delicious Chocolate Cream Cold Brew at home! Made with malted milk and cocoa powder, this cold drink coffee literally takes minutes to make with most ingredients you have on hand. Minus the malted milk. I’ve seen some versions made with the actual chocolate syrup, however, I went with the malted powder mixed with cocoa and felt it was more authentic and not overly sweet. Starbucks does add sweetener to their cold brew and also to the foam. I only added sweetener to the cold foam and not the brew, but again, aim to cut back on your added sugar when and where you can. The foam is cream as fat does provide flavor. Simply watch your saturated fat through the rest of the day rather than hyperfocus on any one food!
Ingredients: Chocolate Cream Cold Brew
- Coffee: Recommend cold brew for this recipe. It’ll be less acidic than iced coffee, although you could ice your coffee in a pinch.
- Heavy Whipping Cream: This really is the key to the cream/foam like Starbucks makes. While it is high in saturated fat, the fat helps to provide flavor. My encouragement is to watch your saturated fat intake for the whole day and not hyperfocus on any one food.
- Half and Half: Using both the whipping cream and half and half makes it not too heavy. You could use all whipping cream, however, I do find it actually too thick. The half and half gives it a little lighter feel.
- Malted Milk: This is the one ingredient you may not have on hand. That famous coffee place uses a chocolate version, but I adapted here and used plain malted milk and mixed it with cocoa powder. If you can find a chocolate version, use that and then leave the cocoa powder out.
- Cocoa Powder: or cacao powder to help make it the chocolate flavor. Again, if you can find a chocolate malted milk already, use that. I wouldn’t recommend using a chocolate syrup, but that’s just me.
- Simple Syrup: Cold brew is quite bitter. I’ve lessened the amount of added sugar and only sweeten the chocolate cream. In my simple syrup recipe I added vanilla to make a vanilla simple syrup. If you only have a plain version, add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. And if you don’t want to make one, use a sweetener of your choice. Keep in mind, the final version will taste a bit different.
How To Make Chocolate Cream Cold Brew
Making chocolate cream cold brew at home is quite easy! Even easier since I bought the cold brew coffee and it’s ready to go (although I’ve been dabbling with making my own – stay tuned!) Simply combine all the other ingredients together and whip to make the cream. That’s it! The whipped cream will stay in the fridge and could be reused, however, I found it was best enjoyed the day of. Here are a few ways to whip the cream:
- Blender: If you’re making up a lot to make these drinks for a few people, I’d say the blender is the way to go. Add all the ingredients to a small blender and blend for about 30 seconds until thick and creamy.
- Handheld Milk Frother: This method will take a little longer, however, it still works. You’re in essence creating whipped cream and that can take some time. Add all the ingredients to a jar or cup and use the handheld milk frother to whip until thick and creamy.
- Mason Jar: This is actually my favorite way, only because I usually make it just for myself. It’s how I make ‘fresh’ whipped cream for desserts, etc. Add all the ingredients to the mason jar and shake for ~2 minutes. Yes, it sounds like a long time, but it’s crazy how easy it is to do with just a little arm strength.

Ingredients
Chocolate Cream
- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup half and half
- 1–2 tablespoon vanilla simple syrup*
- 1 tablespoon malted milk
- 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
For Serving
- Cold Brew or really strong coffee
- Sweetener, if using
Instructions
- Blender: Add all of the chocolate cream ingredients to a blender and mix for about 30 seconds until thick and creamy. This is the fastest method, but also the most clean-up!
- Handheld milk frother: Add all of the ingredients to a jar or glass and whip with a handheld milk frother until thick and creamy.
- Mason Jar: Add all of the ingredients to the mason jar and shake for ~2 minutes until thick and creamy.
- Electric Milk Frother: Mix together the ingredients in a jar or glass. Working in batches (so you don’t overfill the frother), pour into an electric milk frother and select the cold froth option.
- Serve: Fill a tall glass with ice and pour in 6-ounces of cold brew or strong black coffee. Mix in 1 tablespoon simple syrup, if using. Top with about 1/3 – 1/2 the chocolate cream cold foam, sprinkle with an extra dash of cocoa powder and enjoy!
