I made a cookie box during the holidays, and while most people gravitate toward cookies, cookies are not the dessert I go for! I’ll eat a cookie, but they’re not my favorite dessert. Enter these relatively easy Oreo Truffles. Who doesn’t like an Oreo cookie? Mix in cream cheese, and you’re talking about the most decadent bite of fudgy goodness! Whether you’re making a holiday cookie box or want to add these to your list of Valentine’s Day treats, these will be a hit whatever time of year you make them!

Desserts and Diabetes

Desserts are always a hot topic in diabetes management. As a dietitian and diabetes educator, I teach patients the importance of including something sweet rather than avoiding it altogether. The more you avoid, the more you tend to overeat the next time you’re around whatever dessert is around. Some patients have told me they do better with that ‘all or none’ approach, but research shows that mindset will backfire!

It’s important to discuss how food impacts blood sugar, including desserts. The effects of the desserts on blood sugar will depend on what they consist of. This dessert has approximately one Oreo cookie per truffle combined with cream cheese. Low in carbs, higher in fat. Some desserts are all carbs and can immediately increase a blood sugar level, whereas this dessert is not too high in carbs, and because it has fat, it may slow the rise of the blood sugar. Everyone responds differently to food in terms of their blood sugar response. Additionally, blood sugars are also impacted by medications and movement(along with many other factors that can influence a blood sugar response).

Ingredients: Oreo Truffles

  • Oreo Cookies: There really is no substitute for this ingredient. If you’re making homemade Oreos, grab the real deal at the grocery store and thank me later. They sell Oreos in different sizes now and also in various flavors. I used the original, not the double stuff.
  • Cream Cheese is also a non-negotiable ingredient in this recipe. I haven’t tried it with a lower-fat version. Fat provides flavor; while this is a saturated fat source, remember we are eating a dessert. You’ll want to make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature. I try not to make desserts ‘healthified’.
  • Chocolate Chips: I opted for a 60% cacao dark chocolate. You can use milk, dark, or white chocolate, whichever you enjoy the most!
  • Coconut Oil: Some will say this is optional. However, the coconut oil helps to form a shell on the outside.
  • Optional Toppings: Crushed cookie, colored sprinkles, or whatever your heart desires. You could even drizzle a little of the chocolate on top if there’s any extra!

How To Make Oreo Truffles

This recipe might seem a little intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll make these Oreo truffles for all your parties and get-togethers, and people will talk about them for a long time!

  1. Make the Oreo filling. Add the Oreos to a food processor and pulse until small crumbs form. If you do not have a food processor, place them in a plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Please reserve a few crumbs to top the truffles (if this is your topping).
  2. Cut the cream cheese into cubes and add to the food processor with the Oreo crumbs. Pulse until a ball forms and the cookies and cream cheese are thoroughly mixed. You could also use a hand mixer or stand mixer for this step (but why make more dishes?)
  3. Scoop: Using a 1-inch, small cookie scoop, portion out the filling and roll it into balls. Place them on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
  4. Freeze for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Melt the chocolate. Place the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a heat-safe bowl. Place the bowl over a small pot with about 1 to 2 inches of simmering water. Melt the chocolate, stirring frequently. Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring every 10-15 seconds to make sure the chocolate is melting evenly. In the microwave in 30-second increments or a double boiler, stir until smooth.
  6. Dip: Remove the truffles from the freezer. Use a fork to dip them in the melted chocolate. Gently tap the fork on the side of the bowl with the truffle to remove any excess chocolate. Place the truffles back on the lined cookie sheet. If you’re adding a topping, please add it, as the chocolate will start to set. Place them back in the freezer for 10 more minutes to help speed up the process.
What types of Oreos are best to use for these Truffles?

Stick with the classic Oreos! You might be tempted to use the Double-Stuf; however, that extra filling will make the crumb mixture too greasy and wet and make it difficult to roll into a ball and set. Something to keep in mind is that some flavors have extra filling and weigh more. The regular and the Golden Oreos weigh the same, whereas the Mint Creme Oreos weigh more. I’ve only tested the regular Oreos (and double stuff).

What chocolate should I use?

The simple answer is one that you will enjoy! I used dark chocolate; however, white chocolate can be used, and it will be much sweeter.

Why does the chocolate harden before I finish?

The dipping chocolate needs to stay fluid as you dip it. If it starts to set and harden, you can microwave it for 10 seconds. Make sure you don’t get the chocolate too hot; otherwise, it will actually make the Oreo balls start to fall apart!

How do I store the Oreo Truffles?

Because the Oreo Truffles contain cream cheese, they should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Can the Oreo Truffles be frozen?

Yes! The Oreo Truffles can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months (if they last that long). Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

Optional Garnishes

  • Crushed Oreo crumbles are the simplest to add on. Make sure to add the crumbs as the chocolate is still wet so they’ll stay set.
  • Sprinkles! This keeps the Oreo truffles fun and festive, and they look different whatever holiday you’ll be celebrating! The sprinkles used in this picture are from Trader Joe’s and do not contain any red dye. They’re naturally colored.
  • Add a contrasting chocolate drizzle on top. If you coated the Oreo Truffles in dark chocolate, melt some white chocolate, and drizzle with a fork across the tops!
