Passion Fruit - Porn Star - Martini

The Passion Fruit Martini aka Porn Star Martini, a provocatively named cocktail, has become a modern classic. A combination of vanilla vodka and passion fruit, accompanied by a shot of sparkling wine, this might just be the summer cocktail of 2024! Light and refreshing, and perfect on a hot summer day. Cheers!

Scour the internet for the ‘summer cocktail of 2024’ and many are claiming the Lone Ranger Cocktail to be the ‘it’ drink of the summer. Dive a little deeper and some say the Porn Star Martini will be *the* drink of the summer. Debate all you want, the ingredients are easier to find for the Lone Ranger Cocktail, however, you must love tequila for this drink. If you can some fresh passion fruit, then definitely add this Porn Star Martini to your list of must tries! (not to self, plant a new passion fruit vine stat!)

The Porn Star Martini is a modern take on the classic martini cocktail. You might be wondering how did the name porn star martini come about? It has nothing to do with porn, and everything to do with passion fruit. Originally called the Maverick Martini by a London bartender, Douglas Ankrah, after he made a trip to a strip club in South Africa in 2002. He named the martini after a club in South Africa called the Maverick, but shortly changed the name to Porn Star as passion fruit is often noted as an aphrodisiac. Whatever name you want to call this martini, make sure to add this to your list of more *exotic* drinks to make!

The passion fruit martini combines premium vodka, passionfruit liqueur, and fresh lime juice for a unique flavor profile. The vodka is your standard base for a martini, combined with tart passion fruit pulp and sweet passion fruit liquor that results in a fresh drink that has enough complexity to make it interesting.

Ingredients: Passion Fruit Martini

  • Vanilla Vodka: I know what you’re thinking, vanilla vodka? I used regular vodka with vanilla extract added in and it oddly tasted off. Went ahead and purchased the ‘flavored’ vanilla vodka and know I’ll use if for other specialty drinks (at some point). Yes, this martini is boujee, but SO worth it.
  • Passion Fruit Purée: You want the actual fruit purée, not just the juice. Here in Miami passion fruit is accessible at your local farmer’s market. Again, this drink is boujee, however, if you do find your hands on some fresh passion fruit, it’s a must make!
  • Passion Fruit Liquor: This will help add some sweet to the fruit’s tart flavor. The brand I used is Passoã, but whatever brand you find works. Similar to the Lillet Blanc I used in the French Blonde Cocktail, I used the remaining Lillet Blanc for a Lillet Spritz, 1/2 Lillet Blanc 1/2 sparkling water. This passion fruit liquor can be used in the same way: 1/2 Passion Fruit Liquor 1/2 sparkling water to make a spritz and use up the remaining liquor. No food/drink waste in this house!
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor (rather than using the lime juice products sold in supermarkets).  Microwave for 20 seconds to help get more juice.
  • Simple Syrup: Easy to make homemade and store in your fridge for drinks as needed. This helps provide some sweetness to balance out not only the alcohol but also the tart passion fruit.
  • Fresh Passion Fruit: Feel free to leave the fresh fruit garnish off (passion fruit are expensive and hard to find), however, if you have the fresh for the purée and do have some leftover, it make is *sexy* as heck!
  • Prosecco: As always, buy a Prosecco that you can drink with pleasure but that isn’t absurdly expensive. This is a sidecar for this drink and not the main event. I love using the smaller bottles here as not much is needed for this drink.

How To Make A Passion Fruit Martini

  1. Prep your passion fruit purée. Whether you buy a frozen version or have fresh, the idea here is remove the seeds. This can be tedious with fresh, however, know you can leave them in. You simply ‘slurp’ them down as there is no chewing the seeds.
  2. Add in a cocktail shaker full of ice the vanilla vodka, passion fruit liquor, passion fruit purée, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup.
  3. Cover with the lid and shake vigorously for 15 to 30 seconds. When your hands start to feel very, almost painfully cold, that’s when you’ll know it’s ready. This is *key* to creating a perfectly cold drink with that beautiful froth.
  4. Pour the drink into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
  5. Garnish with a passion fruit half. *optional*.
  6. Serve with a shot of Prosecco alongside (or pour into your drink).

Recipe Tips

How do you serve the Prosecco shot?

Traditionally, Prosecco is served in a shot glass alongside this martini, aka a sidecar. People take this chaser in different ways, but for the most classic experience, it’s supposed to be sipped on before your martini to cleanse your palate. If you don’t have a shot glass you can always skip the ‘cleansing’ and pour the Prosecco directly into your drink.

How do you create the frothy top?

The key is the shaking. You need to shake it very, very well. We’re talking until your hands are freezing cold and you’ve shaken for about 30 seconds. Not only does the froth make the drink look amazing but the froth also makes the drink taste creamier and silkier.

Are there other martini variations?

As mentioned, passion fruit can be hard to acquire. Other tropical fruits would make great substitutions/variations. Here in Miami mango is plentiful and would make a great version. Pineapple and even kiwi could make a great martini as well. See what you like the most and keep experimenting. Makes for more fun!
